What to pack for studying in Australia

[:en]Studying overseas is certainly one of the biggest steps students take towards reaching their academic and career goals. So, as a student, have you been planning to study abroad in the ‘Land Down Under’?

Oh! If you didn’t know what that means, here’s a fun fact for you: Australia was discovered when Europeans began their exploration for land under the vast continent of Asia. And that’s how the name came along!

It is definitely exciting when the time comes and you are ready to pack. But, it can be equally overwhelming too! So before hopping on the plane and starting your adventure you need to have a checklist.

While preparing for your Australia , packing smartly is the best way to ensure a smooth study journey. There are a set of things that you need to do in order to make sure that you are ready for your study abroad plans.

So, we have come up with a list to help you in your packing process. Just a double-check on these before you leave, and you are good to roll!

1. Cash and Cards
Australia has several banking options for international students. However, it may take a few days or weeks to set up your account.

Meanwhile, as the need to access funds is present, there are other alternatives. You will be able to access money from your bank account back home, via a debit card. Make sure to inform the bank about your travel plans for smooth processing.

It is certainly better to have cash (in AUD) on you. It is recommended that you carry around AUD$700 - AUD$1000. Although, this does vary depending on your circumstances. Whatever said and done, ensure the exchange of your local currency cash into Australian dollars before you leave.

2. Visa
The key to beginning your study in Australia journey is securing your visa. With this in place, you can finally begin working towards your dream career overseas! Listed below are the mandatory requirements.

As an international student, you need an Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500). Once you have an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your institution, you can apply for the visa online.

The current fee to apply for an Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) is AUD$620 regardless of the length of your program.

You may visit the Department of Home Affairs website for more information.

3. Take appropriate climate clothing
Due to the geographical size of the country, Australians enjoy variety in their climate as well. Australia usually experiences a Mediterranean style of climate- warm to extremely hot, and mild winters.

If you go to cities like Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, you will need more warm clothing. Choose jackets that are easier to store and occupy less space.

So, pack accordingly clothes that fit the varying climate, such as tee-shirts, sweaters, jackets, hoodies, jeans, mufflers, etc. If you go to cities like Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, you will need more warm clothing. Choose jackets that are easier to store and occupy less space.

4. Electronic equipment
In today’s age, we just can’t do without using a phone for even basic purposes. Beginning with phones, laptops and cameras, it is best to be prepared.

And who would’ve thought the plug point may differ from country to country? So, pack your own universal adapter!

Although you can get adapters and chargers in Australia, it’s always good to have the appropriate accessories for your devices.

Having a portable power bank will always come in handy at times you would least expect the need. Bringing a wireless speaker along with you might not be a bad idea as well. Music never fails to keep you occupied for hours after all.

5. Stock up on your Medications
In case you are/were under any medical treatment, you are required to bring a prescription from your doctor(in English) and the medications in their original packaging.

Remember to pack all the medicines that you need. Also, check the regulations of the country. There might be restrictions on what medicines you can carry even if you have a prescription.

Try to have a good amount of backup stock for every medication you carry, in case of any emergency.

Voila! That pretty much covers every necessity you should look into before you take flight.

The last thing on your to-do list is to get checked off here. Just tick off everything from your personal checklist as well, and you will be good to go!
