[:en]It is a common perception that the performing arts industries in most places doesn’t pay one well.
While getting a job in the industry might seem tricky, many are still living and pursuing their dreams in it. Well, the good news come with Singapore Government efforts to increase public participation in the arts, the advent of technology and a more supportive public attitude have also contributed towards a better working environment for Singaporean artists.
With Singaporeans becoming better-educated and more well-travelled, they have an increasing desire to embrace the arts. There are more young people committed to engaging in the arts, which is comforting to know, especially with the support from the “new-generation parents” who are willing to let their children follow their passions, so long as they are happy.
While there are many performing arts schools surfacing in Singapore, many are still seeking to study overseas for greater exposure and expanding network for their future.
The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) at ECU is 1 of the world’s leading performing arts academies, with one of the notable alumni - Hugh Jackman. WAAPA is recognised nationally and internationally for the quality of its graduates. It provides the most comprehensive way of performing arts training in Australia – both on stage and behind the scenes. Entry into each course is competitive, and there will be auditions and/or interview as part of the application process.
WAAPA is located at Mount Lawley Campus, one of the three ECU campuses in Western Australia.

Taking WAAPA to the World
WAAPA staff and students are engaging in an ever-increasing amount of internationalisation with opportunities for study and overseas performance. In 2018, the graduating cohort of the acting students travelled to Los Angeles for the first time to present their Hollywood Showcase. Dance students travelled to Beijing and Taiwan, while LINK Dance Company performed in Berlin, Amsterdam and Marseille. Bachelor of Performing Arts students were in Singapore, jazz students attended the Improvisation summer School in Paris and the percussion students attended the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis.
